How to Design and Produce Cycling Shorts
When creating cycling shorts, the first step is to decide between sublimated and predyed panels. Each option offers distinct visual and functional results.
1. Predyed Panels
A current trend in cycling apparel is to use predyed fabrics for the entire bottom section of the shorts. These fabrics provide a deep, uniform black and a premium aesthetic.
However, predyed fabrics cannot be sublimated, which means any logos or graphics must be applied as heat transfers. These transfers are sourced separately and come at an additional cost.
Recommended for:
- Teams or brands seeking a solid, professional black look
- Minimalist designs with few or no printed elements
Another reason why not to go for predyed colors other than black, see photo. No words needed.

2. Sublimated Panels
If you prefer printed designs or custom branding directly integrated into the fabric, sublimated panels are the right choice. However, we recommend avoiding black sublimation for the following reasons:
a. The black tone of sublimated panels will not perfectly match the black of predyed fabrics.
b. When stretched, sublimated blacks may appear slightly grey due to fabric tension.
c. For inside panels in colors like red, blue, or green, please confirm the minimum order quantity (MOQ)—usually starting at 70 pieces. Note that these lighter shades offer no concealment, which should be considered in the design phase.
3. Shoulder Straps
For bib shorts, we recommend white straps, as they remain discreet under light-colored jerseys.
Black straps are possible but may visually interfere with light jersey designs.
In summary:
Always verify color combinations, MOQs, and strap choices with our team before production.
Choose predyed for deep, consistent color and a sleek finish.
Choose sublimation for full customization and printed graphics.
